VALGRANDE NATURE RESERVE.
AN EXCURSION OF RARE BEAUTY TO BE EXPERIENCED ON FOOT, BY BICYCLE, CANOE AND KAYAK.
It has characterised the arrival in Bibione for centuries. This is VALGRANDE, that extraordinary stretch of lagoon water as far as the eye can see, which, from the first roundabout, accompanies us to the gates of the tourist resort.
Scientifically classified as a man-made fishing valley, it actually represents much more both in naturalistic and experiential terms due to the emotions it releases in those who visit it for the first time. Emotions made of water, mirages, sounds and colours, of an ancient history dating back to Roman times.
In a few minutes, the lively and dynamic holiday setting gives way to an unexpected and surprising landscape, silent and intimate, a dozen brackish water lakes where mallards, grey and red herons nest, turtles cool off in small ponds, flamingos reflect in the water, deer watch you in the undergrowth and a variety of birds stop to rest during migration. There follows a labyrinth of sandbanks, shallows and reed beds, alternating with centuries-old holm oak forests, een Mediterranean scrub recorded as far back as 1480 in the maps of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, and a rare 7-hectare prairie that also harbours flowers of particular botanical importance, such as powdery primroses, marsh gentians and numerous subspecies of orchids.
